Fuel Your Potential: The Foveo Guide to Energy Gels
The sun is out, the miles are getting longer, and those goals are finally shifting from "plan" to "action." But as any runner knows, your legs are only as strong as your fueling strategy. If you’ve ever hit "the wall" halfway through a long run, you know that timing your energy gels for runners is just as important as choosing the right shoes. At Foveo Running, we want you to finish every run feeling strong, not depleted. Here is everything you need to know about mastering the art of the energy gel.   Why Use Energy Gels? When you run, your body primarily burns glycogen stored in your muscles. On runs lasting longer than 60 minutes, those stores start to run dry. Energy gels for runners provide a concentrated burst of simple carbohydrates that enter your bloodstream quickly, giving your brain and muscles the "spark" they need to keep moving. When to Consume: The "Early and Often" Rule Don't wait until you’re hungry to fuel; by then, it’s often too late. A solid running nutrition strategy involves "pre-loading" a gel about 15 minutes before you start. During the run, aim for one gel every 30 to 45 minutes. Pro Tip: Always take your running fuel with a few sips of water to aid digestion and prevent stomach upset. Smart Storage: Running Belts vs. Vests You’ve got your running nutrition dialled, but where do you put five gels when you're wearing lightweight gear? While shorts have small pockets, a dedicated running belt is the gold standard for a bounce-free experience. At Foveo, we often recommend belts for their lightweight and small carrying capacity—perfect for sunny road miles or fast trail loops. Naked vs. Nathan: Which Running Belt is for You? Naked Running Band: This is the ultimate "minimalist" choice. It’s a high-performance, 4-way stretch band that sits flat against your waist. It has massive carrying capacity for its weight, easily holding multiple energy gels, your phone, and even a soft flask without any shifting. Nathan Waist Packs: If you prefer a more traditional fit with adjustable straps, Nathan offers incredible versatility. These are great for runners who want a secure, zippered pocket for keys and specific holsters for their running fuel. Caffeine: The Strategic Boost Many caffeinated energy gels, like the ones we stock from GU Energy or Maurten, are designed to reduce the perception of effort. Save these for the second half of your run or a particularly grueling climb to help you stay focused when the fatigue kicks in. Finding Your Perfect Fit Not all guts are created equal. Some runners prefer the variety of GU Original, while others find hydrogels like Maurten GEL 100—which uses a unique matrix to bypass stomach distress—to be a game-changer. If you are looking for a precision-based approach, Precision Fuel & Hydration gels are a fantastic option. Known for their clear "PF 30" or "PF 90" labeling, they take the guesswork out of your running nutrition strategy by telling you exactly how many grams of carbs you're hitting per serving. Their neutral flavor profile and easy-to-digest formula make them a favorite for athletes tackling long distances. Practice Makes Progress Your gut is a muscle that can be trained! Use your weekend long runs to test different brands and storage options. By the time race day rolls around, your running fuel strategy should be second nature. Ready to find your flavour? Light Up the Night: Your Guide to Staying Visible on the Run
The days are getting longer, but for most of us, the "9-to-5" means our miles are still happening under the stars. Running at night or in the early morning twilight brings a unique kind of peace to the Comox Valley—no traffic, just the sound of your breath and the pavement. However, being invisible isn't a superpower you want when sharing the road with vehicles. At Foveo Running, we believe your safety is non-negotiable. "Being seen" is about more than just wearing a bright shirt; it’s about creating 360-degree visibility so drivers can recognize you as a human in motion from hundreds of yards away. Here is the Foveo guide to the best gear and strategies to stay visible and safe during your night runs.     The Three Layers of Visibility To be truly safe, you need to think in layers. At Foveo, we categorize night running gear into three essential groups: Passive Reflectivity, Active Lighting, and Biomotion. 1. Passive Reflectivity (The Foundation) This is gear that doesn't "glow" on its own but reflects light back to its source (like car headlights). Most running jackets and tights have small hits of reflective tape, but for high-traffic areas, you need more. Nathan Reflective Products: We stock a variety of Nathan essentials like the Streak Reflective Vest. It’s ultra-lightweight, doesn't trap heat, and provides 360-degree reflectivity that is visible from up to 1,200 feet away. If you don't want a full vest, Nathan Reflex Snap Bands are a quick "click-and-go" solution for your wrists or ankles. 2. Active Lighting (The "Glow") Active lighting means you are emitting your own light, making you visible even before a headlight hits you. The Nitevest: This is a staff favorite at the shop. Unlike a standard reflective vest, the Nitevest uses integrated LED fiber optics to wrap you in a constant glow. It’s rechargeable, weather-resistant, and ensures you aren't just a "flash" in a headlight, but a constant presence on the road. Clip-on Lights: Small but mighty, LED strobes like the Nathan StrobeLight can be clipped onto your waistband, hat, or the back of your shoes to provide a pulsing signal to anyone approaching from behind. 3. Biomotion (The Human Element) Research shows that drivers recognize the "human form" much faster when light is placed on moving joints. By placing reflective products or lights on your ankles and wrists, the up-and-down motion signals "runner" to a driver’s brain much faster than a solid light on your chest would.   Don't Forget to See: Headlamps Being seen is half the battle; the other half is seeing where you’re going to avoid those pesky Comox Valley potholes or trail roots. A high-lumen headlamp is essential. Look for something with at least 200–400 lumens for road running and 500+ for the trails. Many modern headlamps now feature "reactive lighting" that adjusts brightness based on ambient light, saving your battery for the darkest stretches of your run.   Foveo Pro Tips for Night Running Safety Run Against Traffic: On roads, always run facing oncoming cars. This gives you the best chance to react if a driver doesn't see you. The "One-Ear" Rule: If you run with music, keep one earbud out or use bone-conduction headphones. Your ears are your best radar for approaching vehicles. Assume You’re Invisible: Even with a Nitevest and headlamp, always assume the driver hasn't seen you. Make eye contact at intersections and wait for a clear signal before crossing. Check Your Charge: Make it a habit to plug in your LEDs and headlamp as soon as you get home. There’s nothing worse than getting two miles out and having your "active light" go dark.   Gear Up and Glow Staying visible doesn't have to be a chore. Modern gear is so lightweight and breathable that you’ll barely notice it—until a driver gives you a wide berth because they saw you from three blocks away. Ready to light up your miles? Come visit us at Foveo Running to try on the Nitevest and browse our full collection of Nathan reflective products. Let's make sure your 2026 goals stay on track, day or night.

We couldn't have accomplished this without the generous support of sponsors, volunteers and athletes - thank you for showing up! Here is a breakdown of where these fundraising proceeds went from these 4 races the past 3 years: Cumberland Community Forest Society - $112,357 United Riders of Cumberland - $30,282 Comox Valley Search & Rescue - $23,315 St. John Ambulance - $6,450 Campbell River Search & Rescue - $4,421 Project Watershed - $4,241
