The days are getting longer, but for most of us, the "9-to-5" means our miles are still happening under the stars. Running at night or in the early morning twilight brings a unique kind of peace to the Comox Valley—no traffic, just the sound of your breath and the pavement. However, being invisible isn't a superpower you want when sharing the road with vehicles.
At Foveo Running, we believe your safety is non-negotiable. "Being seen" is about more than just wearing a bright shirt; it’s about creating 360-degree visibility so drivers can recognize you as a human in motion from hundreds of yards away.
Here is the Foveo guide to the best gear and strategies to stay visible and safe during your night runs.
To be truly safe, you need to think in layers. At Foveo, we categorize night running gear into three essential groups: Passive Reflectivity, Active Lighting, and Biomotion.
This is gear that doesn't "glow" on its own but reflects light back to its source (like car headlights). Most running jackets and tights have small hits of reflective tape, but for high-traffic areas, you need more.
Active lighting means you are emitting your own light, making you visible even before a headlight hits you.
Research shows that drivers recognize the "human form" much faster when light is placed on moving joints. By placing reflective products or lights on your ankles and wrists, the up-and-down motion signals "runner" to a driver’s brain much faster than a solid light on your chest would.
Being seen is half the battle; the other half is seeing where you’re going to avoid those pesky Comox Valley potholes or trail roots. A high-lumen headlamp is essential. Look for something with at least 200–400 lumens for road running and 500+ for the trails. Many modern headlamps now feature "reactive lighting" that adjusts brightness based on ambient light, saving your battery for the darkest stretches of your run.
Gear Up and Glow
Staying visible doesn't have to be a chore. Modern gear is so lightweight and breathable that you’ll barely notice it—until a driver gives you a wide berth because they saw you from three blocks away.
