La Sportiva Prodigio Pro review: a fast trail racer for technical terrain

Quick look: La Sportiva Prodigio Pro trail running shoe

The La Sportiva Prodigio Pro is a fast, max-cushioned trail racer for technical terrain. It pairs a bouncy XFlow Speed midsole with La Sportiva's trademark grip and lockdown, so you can push the pace on roots and rock without losing control. We've been running it on the Cumberland trails here at Foveō Running in Courtenay, BC, and it's one of the most fun trail shoes on our wall.

What is the La Sportiva Prodigio Pro?

The Prodigio Pro is the racer of La Sportiva's Prodigio family: a max-cushioned trail shoe built for race day, ultras and fast efforts on technical terrain. It's La Sportiva stepping into the modern foam era while keeping the precise, mountain-ready feel the brand is known for.

Key specs:

  • Stack: 34 mm heel / 28 mm forefoot (6 mm drop)
  • Weight: 255 g (9.0 oz), men's
  • Midsole: XFlow Speed: a nitrogen-infused supercritical TPU core inside an EVA cage
  • Outsole: FriXion XF 2.0 rubber with 4 mm lugs, plus rubber metatarsal protection
  • Upper: Power Wire mesh with a midfoot wrap and a built-in knit gaiter collar
  • Plate: none

How does the Prodigio Pro feel on Comox Valley trails?

Lively and planted at the same time. The XFlow Speed foam gives a bouncy, energetic ride, but the shoe still feels stable and predictable over roots, slabs and off-camber corners.

It's fast. Smooth on the rail trail, poppy on Two-and-a-Juice, and pure fun bombing down That Dam Trail. This is a shoe that makes you pick up the pace because it feels that good.

It still feels like La Sportiva. Confident through twists and across those "please don't roll an ankle" descents. You get a raised stack and super-trainer energy without the wobbly, tippy feel some plated trail shoes have.

The grip is dialled. FriXion rubber gives trustworthy traction on wet roots, granite and boardwalk, which matters on our coast from October to April.

No more sock mulch. The knit gaiter collar keeps twigs, grit and mystery trail debris out, so you finish without half of Cumberland Forest in your socks.

The fit locks in. The Power Wire midfoot wrap holds your foot in place on fast, technical downhills.

Who is the Prodigio Pro best for, and who should skip it?

It's best for trail runners who like to run fast on technical ground and want cushion without a carbon plate.

  • Good fit: racers from 10 km to ultra distance (think Perseverance), tempo days and speedy group runs, medium to narrow feet, and runners who are confident on roots and sharp corners.
  • Skip it if: you want a soft, do-everything daily trainer (try the Prodigio 2), you need extra room up front, or you mostly run deep mud and winter slop. For that, grab the Akasha II instead.

Prodigio Pro vs Prodigio 2 vs Prodigio Max: which should you choose?

Choose the Pro for speed and racing, the Prodigio 2 for everyday training, and the Max for the longest days. All three share a 6 mm drop; the difference is the foam and how it feels.

Specs from La Sportiva. Shop the Prodigio 2 or the Prodigio Max, or pair the Pro with the Bushido III for shorter, more technical days.

How does the Prodigio Pro fit?

Snug. It has a race-focused fit, and our customers usually size up a half to a full size. Try it on with the socks you race in, and come by the shop so we can check length and lockdown before you commit.

Prodigio Pro: quick questions

Does the La Sportiva Prodigio Pro have a carbon plate?
No. It gets its energy return from the XFlow Speed foam, not a plate, which keeps it more stable on uneven ground.

Is the Prodigio Pro good for ultras?
Yes. La Sportiva built it as a racer for ultras and fast efforts. If comfort matters more than speed on very long days, the Prodigio Max is the more cushioned choice.

Is the Prodigio Pro waterproof?
No, it has a breathable mesh upper with no waterproof membrane.
